NCAS member, Susan Purser Hope has collaborated with fellow glass artist, Annie Lloyd, to create “A Modern Monstrance” which will be exhibited as part of Joined Up Art 2013 in the Narthex at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Norwich from 18th to 23rd July.
Susan says 'As artists, we have questioned whether meditative religious symbolism matters in an age of secular pleasures, rolling news and instant sound bites. The alliance between Annie Lloyd and Susan Purser Hope has allowed us to explore this in depth within a modern context – especially timely with the ordination of the new Bishop of East Anglia on 15th July. The work is a flamboyant and jubilant challenge made in fused and slumped glass. Standing over 6ft tall, the sculpture is suspended on a black metal stand enabling the viewer to see it from all sides. We have been influenced by the North Norfolk skies, rolling countryside and the overwhelming presence of the sea has greatly influenced our interpretation of a Monstrance and its relationship to Nature. We have even used seaweed from Cromer beach to slump glass over as a representation of both water and air - vital elements for life on our blue planet home of Earth. Each element of the artwork from the outer skirt through to the transparent fish rotating in the central space is filled with symbolism. Although there is an explanation of Annie and Susan’s ideas next to the sculpture, the intention behind the work is to encourage the viewer to engage with the work and to see what emerges for them personally. Both Susan Purser Hope and Annie Lloyd have been designing and creating works of art for individuals, community projects, hospices, health centres, hospitals, spiritual communities & schools for a number of years. This, however, is the first time they have collaborated on a piece of work and the first specifically crafted for the Church. The artists are putting out a call to any Church that would like to display “A Modern Monstrance” after the exhibition so that the discussion can continue. |
The first edition of Art in Norwich covering March to August 2013 visual art events in and around Norwich has now been replaced by edition 2. This was the cover - it's a handy size to keep in your bag, on the noticeboard or in a drawer at home.
It contains listings and info about most of the visual arts activity in and around Norwich for the next six months. It is available as a download from here, and is also available from partner and arts venues, arts info spinner racks and the Tourist Information Centre. The listings are put together as a collaborative venture and all of the partners contribute to the production and distribution which is coordinated by Marion Catlin of Culture Shift. It offers an overview of venues, organisations and events throughout the year and is great for tourists and visitors as well people who live in and around Norwich. |
