EAAF in lockdown
Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery is currently closed and EAAF events have been suspended as we follow the Government’s advice to reduce the spread of Covid-19 (Coronavirus). Our work continues as we stay in touch with our members by email, profile our artist members through EAAF Presents and provide scholarships at Norwich University of the Arts. We are very grateful for our members’ support and look forward to the time when we can visit exhibitions and gather together again. Amanda Geitner, Director

Kate Walker : mood and light
Living in places as varied as London, Suffolk, Australia and the Isle of Mull on Scotland’s west coast, Kate Walker has been inspired by the differing landscapes and qualities of light in each area. Kate recently gained a Masters in Fine Art with Distinction from Norwich University of the Arts and was a recipient of the Fred Dubery Scholarship awarded by EAAF. The work Kate produces is diverse and varied, but characterized by an atmospheric, sensitive and emotive thread.
We asked Kate to describe her work -

Thoughts of future projects and collaborations, especially those that shine a light on the many environmental issues which need to be addressed …
What is your favourite part of your practice?
The loose initial under layers of a large painting, when possibility and serendipity abound…
Which artist/artists inspire you most?
I find myself repeatedly revisiting the watercolour sketches of J.M.W. Turner, to marvel at how much beauty is captured in so few marks - perfection. In more contemporary and abstract terms, I am inspired by artists such as Sam Lock and Simon Callery who, perhaps similarly to Turner, manage to convey so much with so little. These two artists, like myself, have an interest in disciplines such as history, ecology, geology and archeology, which feeds their work and connects it to environment.
If you could step inside an artwork for a day which would it be & why?
I think it would have to be one of Turner’s semi abstract watercolours, something like ‘Fire at the Grand Storehouse of the Tower of London’. To feel the energy and sublimity of the mark making up close, I imagine a Baroque opera might be playing as a soundtrack …
