PAINT OUT Norwich 14-18 October 2017
PAINT OUT – the outdoor art competition – experience art, live!
Welcome to Paint Out Norwich 2017
With the leaves turning and the days shortening, an en plein air art event in the centre of Norwich might seem an unlikely coupling but it has proved time and time again to be otherwise.
Now in its fourth year it is a truism that Paint Out Norwich has acted positively as an enabler for expanded technical knowledge in outdoor painting practice, a social galvaniser for artists and a forum for artists to shape and share their knowledge, leading to new initiatives and lasting creative friendships from all over the country and abroad.
For those who have yet to come in contact with its wily charms, it is a brilliant chance for the collector to pick up very reasonably priced fresh artwork from emerging talents. This year’s programme will have something for everyone of all ages. And it’s looking very exciting!
For the aspiring water based painter there is the chance to do a Watercolour Masterclass with former Paint Out Norwich winner Richard Bond, and for children to take part in an Impressionist mini-class taught by illustrator Emily Gopaul. Join a workshop, 14th-15th October, www.paintoutnorwich.org/workshops.
Our public Paint Out on Sunday 15th October this year will see us return to the dizzy heights of Mousehold Heath and Ketts Heights. This is a chance to dust down those easels and get out there.
In addition, the Paint Out Norwich open-topped double-decker bus will have those signed up for our Nocturne category painting the city at night from the top deck at selected vantage points in the city centre.
And for artists and non- artists alike, this year will also include a lecture in the Weston Room at the Hostry (17th October - tickets available on www.paintoutnorwich.org/talks/ or at The Theatre Royal box office) by former Norwich Art School Life Room iconoclast John Wonnacott in conversation with Professor Lynda Morris, founder of (EAST) about his life's work, urban perspective, and associations with some of the great names in British Art.
With our Private View on the 18th, the exhibition of up to 200 fresh paintings then continues until the 28th October, at the Cathedral Hostry which will once again provide the hub from which to see some of the best practitioners of outdoor painting.
We look forward to seeing you. Check us out on www.paintout.org

More about Paint Out Norwich – EVENTS & 2018 PLEIN AIR growth - message from James Colman
Paint Out Wells 15-17 September, Norwich 14-18 October, new locations coming in 2018
Paint Out challenges stereotypes of outdoor artists and their painting, bringing their skills and endeavour to the forefront and putting plein air on the UK map
As Paint Out Wells and Paint Out Norwich rapidly approach, it is sobering to stand back and remind all those that have been or may wish to get involved in our events as to just what has been achieved and where the organisation’s ambitions lie. Also, what can we as a team do to improve the events and their outcomes for a range of people with a solid vested interest: artists, collectors, curators, educators, schools, heritage conservators, art enthusiasts and diverse communities.
Our vision is multi-faceted and chameleon-like in its emphasis year on year. Now in its fourth year, Paint Out has played its part in steering outdoor painting away from an inaccurate and unfair perception that it solely represents so-called ‘old school’ traditional hobby artists - a much-maligned group of people who just happen to enjoy doing what they love most - making art en plein air.
Artists participating in Paint Out are seasoned professionals and exceptional amateurs right up there at the forefront of redefining Plein Air easel art, taking it to the next level, sometimes as ‘extreme painting’. They love the outdoors and its incumbent challenges rather than the seeming cosy warmth of the studio. No hygge for them, their art is ‘in the raw.’
It’s not just about dreaming up ideas and having them expensively fabricated, though there is room for that too, but exploring and expanding inter-generational skills, seeing the traditional interact with the modern, an artistic conversation that without cross-fertilization will disappear. Being relevant is almost as subjective as art itself. Never was there a more poignant time to be a realist. Where are the future paintings of the present, that will hang in museums as artworks of the past, acting as an undecaying reportage on our urban landscapes? Photography and other media just don’t present the same interpretation or impact.
I am mindful of Hunter Thompson’s famous quote that “when the going gets tough, the tough get going…” Somehow, it seems to be representative of not just when the weather is unacceptably horrendous, like last year’s Paint Out Wells, and artists have to dig deep to produce great work, but also indicative of the direction, steerage and enthusiasm that working outside inspires in others.
And that is why at Paint Out Wells 2017, in our new marquee with a shelf hanging system, trialled at this year’s Royal Norfolk Show, fresh spontaneous art as a response to our environment (urban and natural) will be back to the fore.
Our category system at Paint Out Norwich allows artists of all persuasions to enter, be judged and win awards based on media of their choice. Furthermore, they can enjoy the camaraderie and competition of brushing up against other artists’ styles and skills, sharpening their own in the process.
It is why we trialled a double-decker bus outside County Hall this summer with eight artists on the open top deck painting the city in broad daylight and why, challengingly, we are asking our nocturne artists this year to paint similar views of the city at night, in the middle of October.
It is also why we are providing an opportunity to those who wouldn’t normally get the chance to shine, to be out there with the professionals getting excited and opening their eyes in an artistic way, maybe for the first time, seeing the world differently at one of our Public ‘paint outs’, be that sunrise on the beach at Wells, or on historic Kett’s Heights, overlooking the city this autumn.
To be part of a growing community of artists who partake in a common desire to inspire others, share their own experiences, whilst at the same time improving their own skills and develop as artists and individuals, that is what Paint Out is trying by hook or by crook to do.
So, whether you are an undecided artist who has been teetering on the edge of entering, my advice predictably is “just do it.” To the non-artist, this is your chance to come and either collect art at the zeitgeist of affordable artworks end of the market or enter into the spirit by volunteering to lend a hand at one of our events. All will be guaranteed a life enhancing and rewarding experience.
Remember, it’s a lot of fun too! See you there, hopefully, and check us out on www.paintout.org and on social media.Enter our 2017 Events hereWorkshops | Public Paint Out | Paint Out Wells-next-Sea | Paint Out Norwich
