Michael Smith: A Retrospective
The Undercroft Gallery, back of the market, Norwich NR2 1ND Exhibition open 16th – 31st July 2022 10am - 4pm. Free entry. Visit our Facebook event here. A bold and ambitious artist, Michael combines salvaged, recycled or found objects with traditional artist's materials to create vibrant and dynamic works that often illustrate his experiences and surroundings of living in rural Norfolk. Born in London in 1960, Michael lives with cerebral palsy and learning difficulties. He moved to Norfolk in the late 1970s and works at Barrington Farm, an art studio based on the North Norfolk coast at Walcott, that supports an internationally recognised community of differently-abled artists. Michael has been continuously developing his practice at Barrington Farm without traditional teaching or training since it opened in 1987. The exhibition aims to explore and celebrate Michael’s work as a Norfolk outsider artist, and invite a wider understanding of culture and creativity outside of the mainstream. Michael has pieces in the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection at the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester, and has shown work in many local, national and international exhibitions throughout his career including at Tate Modern with The Museum of Everything Access Information: The Undercroft Gallery is located under the Memorial Gardens at the back of Norwich Market. There are several steps down to the main entrance and a ramp inside the main entrance. The gallery floor is level. There is another entrance at the south end with a ramp and handrail. "This is a radical, unique collection and possibly the only chance to see all these works together under one roof. An event not to be missed!" Martin Bastow, Barrington Farm Michael Smith: A Retrospective poster designed by Maddison Graphic
