EAAF lockdown update
Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery has re-opened to EAAF members! Public admission will follow later next month, so this is a perfect time to spend time with some of the marvellous works on show. Amongst these is the magnificent painting by JMW Turner of Walton Bridges on the Thames. Part of the Castle Collections, this work was acquired for the region - we can take the opportunity to see it before it comes off display on September 20 to embark on tour, first to Colchester Castle, where it will be on show from 26 September 2020 to 28 March 2021. Julia Cameron : magical transformation
EAAF member Julia Cameron works with the medium of photography, viewing the world through a lens, capturing and recording visual information that is edited, processed and assimilated to express her personal reflections and contemplations on her experiences and feelings. Her most recent work is about to go on show in Kinswomen: Camerons and Kings served with baked starlings, at St Margaret's Church of Art, St Benedict's St, Norwich - from August 26th. While she prepares for the exhibition, we asked Julia to describe her work -
My practice has two threads both involving the creation of large-scale photographs; one inspired by landscapes and the second from old photographs using my own innovative techniques.
What keeps you up at night?
The struggle with the question,'Could I do better?' Spontaneity, innovation and perfectionism are uncomfortable bedfellows and attaining a balance I could liken to dancing on thin ice.
What is your favourite part of your practice?
Seeing the completed prints for the first time when they come back from the printer. It is the magical transformation of the small images on the screen to the large physical photographs and canvases.
Which artist/artists inspire you most?
Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadav Kander and Bill Viola. I have chosen lens-based artists although I do love a whole range of arts practices. Each of my choices has been an innovator and used unconventional approaches in their work. How could I not include Julia Margaret Cameron, my absolute photographer heroine!
If you could step inside an artwork for a day which would it be & why?
The Raft by Bill Viola. It is exquisite in its lighting and use of slow motion filming but also apart from being literally 'immersive', it captures a profound feeling of the strength of the human soul in adversity and recovery.
