EAAF in lockdown
Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery is currently closed and EAAF events have been suspended as we follow the Government’s advice to reduce the spread of Covid-19 (Coronavirus). Our work continues as we stay in touch with our members by email, profile our artist members through EAAF Presents and provide scholarships at Norwich University of the Arts. We are very grateful for our members’ support and look forward to the time when we can visit exhibitions and gather together again. Amanda Geitner, Director

Red Elders : mythical beings
EAAF member Red K Elders is an artist and deep bodyworker/massage therapist. Red lives by a meadow valley near the salt marshes of the Norfolk coast, with two daughters and many cats and various other creatures that drift in and out of the land. Red is known for her mythical pencil drawings inspired by ancient Gods and Goddesses, but lately she has been creating luminous portraits of children, often with animals. We asked Red to describe her work -
Magical portraits of mythical beings and animal familiars.
What keeps you up at night?
My two daughters, always wanting to sleep in bed with me. If not them, then my cats bringing in rabbits, voles and other wild creatures that are either being devoured under my bed or otherwise need to be caught and rescued. At 4am.
What is your favourite part of your practice?
Dropping into a really deep blissful meditative trance state where everything but the pencil and paper disappears for hours on end and I forget to eat, drink, wash, go to the loo etc. Sometimes it is a bit of a shock to climb back out of that place again and find a whole day has passed and I’m actually really hungry/stiff/going blind etc!
Which artists have inspired you most?
Gosh, there are so many. I adore Russian landscape paintings. I once stood in front of ‘After the Rain’ by Arkhip Kuindzhi and wept and wept. I like the old, darkly lit dramatic and real faces found in Caravaggio’s paintings, but also the sublime romance of Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s sensual women. Alphonse Mucha’s incredibly elegant drawings, and Art Nouveau in general always inspire me. The symbolism and surrealism in Leonora Carrington’s creations thrills me. I’m also a great fan of indigenous and outsider art.
If you could step inside an artwork for a day, which would it be & why?
The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch - so I could finally figure of what the heck is going on in some of those bizarre tiny scenes. But only if I was guaranteed to be able to get back home again.
