EAAF in lockdown
Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery is currently closed and EAAF events have been suspended as we follow the Government’s advice to reduce the spread of Covid-19 (Coronavirus). Our work continues as we stay in touch with our members by email, profile our artist members through EAAF Presents and provide scholarships at Norwich University of the Arts. We are very grateful for our members’ support and look forward to the time when we can visit exhibitions and gather together again. Amanda Geitner, Director

During lockdown, East Anglian Art Fund has been profiling artists from the region - this week ceramicist June Gentle
June Gentle : freedom & unpredictability
Inspired by plant forms and landscape, June Gentle's beautiful vessels explore the possibilities of divided spaces. Often flattened in form, her pots are most often hand-built and only occaisonally thrown. June works with the Raku firing process - in which pots are taken out of the gas kiln at 1000 degrees and plunged into sawdust - to transform her glazes in to a variety of irredescent colours and textures.
We asked June to describe her work -
I make ceramic vessels which I fire by the Raku process which allows me the exciting freedom of unpredictability.
What is your favourite part of your practice?
The excitement of cleaning the smokey, blackened pot after firing and seeing the glaze colours emerge.
What keeps you up at night?
Trying to figure out what effect a new glaze will produce or why an existing glaze has misbehaved!
Which artists inspire you most?
Three potters - James Tower for his beautiful black and white vessels of the 1950's and David Howard Jones and David Roberts for their innovative approach to modern raku technique.
If you could step inside an artwork for a day which would it be & why?
The view of Delft by Vermeer. I would like to wander through the old town enjoying the warm red bricked houses with their sky blue ceramic tiles.
