Norfolk makers, held in the stunning setting of The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral.
As 2022 draws to a close, Norfolk Contemporary Craft Society prepares to hold the final exhibition of their Golden Anniversary year. Showcasing an exciting display of the work of both established and emerging members’ at Norwich Cathedral Hostry, the exhibition will be open from Tuesday 29th November until Sunday the 11th December.
Formed in 1972 by local craftspeople, alongside Francis Cheetham, then Director of Norwich Castle Museum, as well as representatives of The Norwich School of Art (now known as N.U.A), the Society continues to be a strong visible presence within the Norfolk & Norwich contemporary arts and crafts scene.
Over the past five decades the Society has continued in its original intentions to promote the work of the finest designer makers in the county. With members’ skills ranging from Basketry and Bookbinding to Weaving and Woodwork, you can be sure that there will be something to impress and entice.
Members range from those at the peak of a lifelong career to emerging and talented newcomers.
This year at the Norwich Cathedral Hostry exhibition the Norfolk Contemporary Craft Society will be showing the work of 28 of their members, introducing the work of two new members: Caroline Hyde-Brown, who works in mixed media and Sevanti Roy, who hand prints textiles.
To celebrate their 50th year and in keeping with its original aims, the Society is keen to encourage and promote a new generation of makers. The “Emerging Makers Award” is aimed at those who are freshly graduated, or traditionally trained.
As well as the 28 established makers, NCCS will also be exhibiting pieces from talented new makers whose work has impressed the Committee. The award gives free membership for one year, the benefits of an experienced maker as a mentor and the opportunity to exhibit work, sometimes for the first time. This fantastic opportunity is open to people of all ages at the start of their craft careers who show exceptional talent and promise.
Being a celebratory year, four Emerging Makers were selected for the Award; Joella Gardner, Mixed media; Cindy Gidney, Basketry; Ali Page, Textiles and Joni Southwood, Woodwork. This really is the perfect opportunity to choose gifts from a carefully curated
selection of stunningly original handmade designs, direct from the makers for that perfect Christmas gift, either for others, or yourself!
