In League With The Moon
An exhibition of painting, print and sculpture
from Amanda Edgecombe & Gus Farnes
Open Saturday 7th November 2020 - 9th January 2021
The Fairhurst Gallery is excited to be reopening their doors with an exhibition of painting, print and sculpture from Suffolk based artists, Gus Farnes and Amanda Edgecombe.
The exhibition co-insides with the Fairhurst Gallery opening their brand new gallery space on Bedford Street. The title is taken from the Suffolk author, Roger Deakin's book, Waterlog.
Gus Farnes is an award winning British sculptor who has exhibited nationally, in both solo and group events. His work explores the human condition and is heavily influenced by the concerns of our times which included geopolitics, the mass movement of people, alienation and the environment. Most of his compositions are cast directly in bronze, as the original is sculpted from wax, and combustable natural materials from his location. Gus cast his first bronze at the age of 16 which led him to Norwich School of Art in 2000. After leaving Norwich, he joined Sotheby’s as graphic artist, where he learned more about art and the art market. In 2016 Gus left Sotheby’s and London to pursue his practice as a sculptor, setting himself up in a studio and foundry located in Suffolk. His sculptures have been acquired for private collections throughout Europe, the US, Asia and Australasia.
Amanda Edgecombe is a painter who works with different media and has exhibited extensively over the past thirty years. After studying Fine Art and Painting she graduated in Printmaking from the Slade UCL. Amanda was awarded a Fellowship in Architectural Glass at Central Saint Martins London and then worked with specialist glass studios in London and Germany exhibiting and installing commissions for private and public spaces.
As a researcher she also worked for a large architectural practice in Clerkenwell and gradually developed a business for interior and landscape design projects in London and Suffolk. Her paintings were steadily influenced by these practical techniques and architectural perspectives, stripping back elements and encouraging a new approach. Colour and light shifted alongside one another so that shapes became broader, paints outlined, raised, sanded, incised and layered with calligraphic and painterly marks.
